Housing Law

We help tenants and co-op partners with legal problems that affect their housing. If you have a landlord and tenant problem, call us at 705-749-9355 and leave a voicemail with your name, phone number you can be reached and a brief description of your problem. If you are being evicted or the sheriff has posted notice to vacate, please mention this in your voicemail.

We are not funded to assist landlords. If you are a landlord, please contact the Landlord Self-Help Centre for help.

If you are experiencing a housing emergency (such as the immediate loss of your housing), call us at 705-749-9355 or you can come to our office at any time, without an appointment.

When speaking with one of our intake workers about a housing problem, be prepared with relevant information such as:

  • Lease/rental agreement(s)
  • Rent receipts
  • Notices from the landlord
  • Letters or printed emails/text messages between you and your landlord
  • Photographs
  • Applications to the Landlord and Tenant Board

The intake worker may ask you to email these documents to us, or drop them off at an agreed upon time, in order to provide the best advice.

The Steps to Justice website offers step-by-step information about housing and other common legal problems.
