Legal Centre Closed – June 20th – Indigenous Peoples Day
The Peterborough Community Legal Centre will be closed on Friday, June 20th to observe and honour National Indigenous Peoples Day. Today and every day, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples across the country. We close on National Indigenous Peoples Day for our staff to reflect on Canada’s colonial history, the ways in which that history continues to impact present day Indigenous communities and our joint responsibility to think about and work towards reconciliation.
The Peterborough Community Legal Centre is located in Nogojiwanong (known colonially as Peterborough), the place at the end of the rapids, which is in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Anishnaabeg. Nogojiwanong resides in Treaty 20 Michi Saagig territory and in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagig and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations. This includes the Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Alderville, Scugog Island, Rama, Beausoliel, and Georgina Island First Nations. The Williams Treaties First Nations are the stewards and caretakers of these lands and waters.
The theme for National Indigenous Peoples Day 2025 is “Keeping the Circle Strong through the Sacred Relationship with Mother Earth” which reflects the pride that First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities take in their rich heritage, traditions and cultures through being the caretakers of Mother Earth and water the giver of life.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is held in June, which is also Indigenous History Month. This is a time for all Canadians to reflect and learn about the history, contributions, cultures and achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. The Legal Centre would like to encourage residents of Nogojiwangong to partake in events that support this learning. Events are being held across Nogojiwangong from June 20th to 23rd:
