Black Inmate Abuse Class Action Certification, opt-out deadline: February 20, 2026
We are sharing this news forwarded by Black Legal Action Centre to the legal clinic system regarding a Black Inmate Abuse Class Action Certification.
The Federal Court has approved a lawsuit as a class action for all Black persons who claim physical or emotional and psychological abuse while incarcerated in a Correctional Service Canada (CSC) jail at any time between April 17, 1985 and December 13, 2023, and who were alive on December 13, 2023.
If you are a Black person who was in jail between April 17, 1985 and December 13, 2023 this Class Action could affect your rights.
Here is a Notice of Class Action Certification (English / French) that provides details about the lawsuit and the rights and options for potential Class Members.
The deadline to opt-out of the Class Action is February 20, 2026.
